We are a small congregation of people who came together to create a new Unitarian Universalist Church in the Rock Valley region of north central Illinois in 2001. With a common ground to search for meaning, and a commitment to our spiritual journey, our membership includes people of diverse thought and action. In every gathering, we are exposed to new ideas and religious diversity from a variety of authors, teachers, and prophets. By coming together in a community in order to express and feel that which is spiritual in our lives, we recognize the desire to share spirituality as a group as well as individuals on their own separate spiritual paths. Our spirituality includes our essence, that unnamable ‘something’ that makes us who we are.
We are a non-creedal church and welcome people of all faith traditions who want to grow in spirit, believe in the worth and dignity of all life, and seek answers to life’s questions from many sources. If you are looking for a church to call home or are just curious about Unitarian Universalism, we invite you to visit our church and meet the people that make it so very special.
COME VISIT US
We eagerly welcome new people and new ideas, and we hope that you will decide to come visit us. When you do, we’d like to make your first visit as pleasant and productive as possible by providing answers to some commonly asked questions.
WHEN SHOULD I VISIT ?
Every Sunday at 10:30 AM we gather for our church service. Our Summer schedule is often different – see the June or July Newsletter or Events at the Chuch.
WHAT ARE SERVICES LIKE ?
Each service includes singing of hymns (we love to sing), readings, sharing of joys and concerns, meditation or prayer, and a sermon or a discussion of a current topic. As a part of every service, those who wish light candles to honor our joys and concerns, acknowledging our heartfelt connection with one another. After the service, we gather in the “Garden room” for refreshments and conversation.
WHAT ACCOMMODATIONS ARE THERE FOR PARENTS & CHILDREN ?
We provide childcare for children under four during the first part of service and during RE class time. Children four and older usually stay with their family for the first part of the service, including a “Story for All Ages.” After the story, the children are sung out of the main Sanctuary and go to their Religious Education classes across the hall. We are very proud of our active Religious Education Program – many of our parents play a critical role in determining the education of our youth. If you are a first time visitor with a small child, please reach out to the greeters when you come in, so that they may let the RE staff know you are here and give you a tour of our classrooms and child-care area. We want both parents and children to have a good experience at UUCRV – please let us know how we can help!
WHERE CAN I FIND YOU ?
You can find us at the corner of School St. and Route 75 (across from Lane’s Auto Service & Car Wash) in Rockton, IL. Our building is the former Stephen Mack School. Our location is wooded, and at first glance may look like a park. We have a small parking lot off of School street, or you can park on the street.
ARE YOU WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE ?
Our church is accessible for the handicapped, but does not have handicapped facilities in the restrooms.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO SERVICES ?
Dress causally and comfortably – you are welcome just as you are. Many members come to church in pants and a sweater.
